Buttermere
This stunning area is on the Western reaches of the Lake District National Park. The valley is approached from Borrowdale over the Honister Pass, an exciting drive passing by the Honister slate quarries and down the steep pass, or from Keswick via the Whinlatter pass.
The name Buttermere means "the lake by the dairy pastures". Buttermere village lies on the flat, fertile land between two lakes, Buttermere and Crummock Water which were originally one post-glacial lake and the land was created by the debris washed down from the surrounding hills.
In the village there are two small hotels / pubs, as well as a number of houses, a tea shop (open in the summer), a small church, a Youth Hostel and a tiny former school, now the village hall.
However you reach the valley you won't fail to be impressed by the sheer magnificence of the mountain backdrop that encircles the valley and lake. Buttermere is more than a weekends worth of interest for anyone interested in fell wallking. Once you achieve the ridge line many of the walks are reasonable easy and the views of both the valley and northern lakes and spectacular.
There is a camp site in the vilage of Buttermere along with two good pubs which serve excellent beer and reasonable food. Buttermere is a small village and the accommodation is limited so plan well ahead. The valley is very popular so don't expect solitude in the peak seasons even though the location seems quite remote.
