Coniston
The largest village on the Eastern side of The Lake District, Coniston is an excellent base for exploring. The village has several small provisions shops including a coop, petrol station and there is a chip shop. The pubs in the village are good. There is a campsite and ample variety of Bed and Breakfasts but it lacks any large hotels.
Grizedale Forest Park and its sculpture park is within easy reach. The Old Man of Coniston, a mountain, towers above the village. Half way up is a Youth Hostel at the Copper mines. From the summit rewarding views of the Western Lakes and South Lakeland. Particulalry stunning is the view south along Coniston.
Nearby is Coniston Water, location of the tragic water speed record attempts by Donald Campbell. In recent years changes to rules on Windermere have seen a return of world speed records on Coniston which provides a focus during November. Popular lake cruises can be taken on a restored steam powered cruiser operated by the National Trust.
