Eskdale Green

By pdjohnson - Posted on 04 February 2008

Eskdale is a perfect starting point for many walks either on the fells or along the River Esk. The river has many natural pools for swimming. It is also popular for fishing and canoeing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains make the seven mile journey down to the sea. There are 5 pubs in the Eskdale valley. The village lies in the beautiful Eskdale Valley which has some of the highest Lakeland peaks at its head. The neighbouring valleys of Wasdale and Dunnerdale are within easy reach. In Eskdale Green itself there are many facilities. Within the village there is a shop that sells most items (food, drink, alcoholic beverages), post office/outdoor shop, public telephone, garage (not petrol) & 2 Inns (which serve excellent food). The nearby village of Gosforth provides a more comprehensive range, including gift shops.
