Hawkshead is a tiny village on the Western side of Windermere and is a typical historic lakeland setting. Surrounded by rolling green fells this cluster of white painted or stone higgledy-piggledy houses is a wonderful place to explore Cars are banned from the village, there being a large car park on the outskirts of the village. Tourism is now the main industry of Hawkshead, with many pleasant inns, guest houses, teashops and gift shops. The village has a long association with Beatrix Potter and the Tales of Peter Rabbit You can learn more about them in Hawkshead at the Beatrix Potter Gallery run by the National Trust.
