Herdwick Sheep on Dungeon Ghyll in Langdale
Herdwick sheep are as much a part of the landscape of the Lake District as dry stone walls and tarns. The are a hardy breed of high fell sheep which have been reared over centuries to cope with the harsh environment which is the Cumbrian fells.
Their survival is largely due to the efforts of Beatrix Potter who became very attached to these curious beasts. In her will she left many Lake District farms to the National Trust. A condition of the gift was that the National Trust must work to maintain the well being of the breed in the region and specifically on the farms which she left.
