In a quiet corner of a lesser known area of Cumbria, High Cup Nick is a huge line of basalt cliffs created when glaciers scoured out part of the pennines and then water erosion continued to further deepen the valley. It has to be one of the most impressive natural sights in Cumbria. To access High Cup Nick you must ascend from Dufton to a height of 580m. The feature is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of England. I must admit, when I visited it was far more imposing and than I had anticipated and would recommend a visit.Whilst the route is straight forward, the high cliff tops require care especially if you plan to take children.
