Kendal

Kendal is situated to the South of The Lake District, about 10 miles from Windermere and not far from junction 36 of the M6 motorway. This ancient town consists of a network of tiny cobbled streets and "ginnels" which are great fun to explore.

The are plenty of characterful shops selling local produce. Visit on Saturday and enjoy the thriving street market. The area around Booths has recently been developed and houses a number of interesting boutique style shops selling anything from housewares to organic produce. The cafe in Booths basement is particularly good but expect to queue.

The 12th-century stone ruins of Kendal Castle sit on a hill on the western edge of the town, offering views over the town and the surrounding hills. You can access the ruins from any side, and it is free! Many visitors to the town miss this attraction oout but it is well worth a look if only for the views you can afford from the top.
