Lowther Castle (Ruin), Lowther
Lowther Castle is a fascinating ruin owned by the Lowther family and is located just south of Penrith near Askham. Whilst you cannot enter the castle itself you can get pretty close and admire this grand building which stands in tact but with roof and windows removed as a bid to avoid heavy death duties.
There are some excellent walks in the Lowther Estate grounds and nearby Askham offers a couple of great pubs. Well worth a visit to grab some fresh air.
