By pdjohnson - Posted on 26 May 2009

Take the A591 north from Ambleside towards Grasmere. This route skims the shores of Rydal Water and affords superb views accross the water to Loughrigg Fell. In Autumn the colours of the turning leaves are spectacular. At Whitemoss Common it is possible to park your car and take a short walk to reach the shores of Grasmere Lake.

At Grasmere you reach a roundabout, turn left heading towards the village centre. A wortwhile distraction in Grasmere is the famous Gingerbread shop just beyond the church. At Grasmere church turn left signed towards Elterwater. This windy road will take you up and over moorland giving panoramic views over Elterwater to The Old Man of Coniston. Take a break in Elterwater at The Britannia Inn, a famous Lakeland pub renowned for great food. Visit the Judy Boyes Studio, well known Lake District water colour artist.

Return to Ambleside via ?? And A593. At Skelwith Bridge why not stretch your legs and witness Skelwith force, a cascade all the more impressive shortly after rain. If you fancy a good cafe, turn right at the A593 and follow signs for Kirkstone Galleries and Chesters cafe shortly on the right hand side.
