Superb snowy scenes all over The Lakes

By pdjohnson - Posted on 01 January 2010

We continue to enjoy a prolonged snowy time here in The Lake District with most fells covered in snow to valley level. All major roads are clear and most minor roads are passable with care. The whole of The Lake District is looking stunning with most mountains now completely covered in snow. Friday has seen further snow falls with more forecast over the weekend.

Hazardous snow conditions on ridges

Fell conditions are good on broad ridges, however extreme care is required when traversing thinner ridges where cornices are not generally frozen and hazardous. I have been out in the North Lakes over the last couple of days and some snow has very poor consolidation and lots of fresh snow over ice. Please exercise caution.

As with all winter outings please ensure you are properly prepared and have consulted the weather forecast before leaving.

Memorable winter predicted by BBC

The BBC are reporting that this winter will be memorable as one of the "proper winters" people remember for years.

"The wind this coming month is anywhere from southeasterly to northerly - all cold at this time of the year.

All parts of the UK can expect more snow at some time alongside below average daytime temperatures and hard night frosts."
