Petition to save vital Penrith Cinema
The local newspapers feature articles reporting the imminent closure of the Alhambra, Penriths cinema. Whilst many visitors to the Lake District may be unaware of this valuable local resource, they will appreciate how important it is to maintain important services. The nearest alternative is Carlisle or Keswick.
It appears that the landlord ( a business in west Cumbria ) are terminating the lease and want to sell the site of the cinema & bingo premises.
The article indicates that JD Wetherspoon are looking to take the site over as another pub in their chain but the pub may only occupy the bingo part of the site. It seems that the cinema will remain open for some time after notice is given for closure of the bingo hall.
The cinema has been thriving for some years with an attendance of about 60,000 customers per annum - so as far as the operator is concerned it is a viable business with employing 30 staff.
Having spoken to a couple in the Globe Inn, Calthwaite this afternoon, I gather that Wetherspoons took over a similar premises in Hull ( I think ) some years ago and they kept the cinema going.
It would be good if the same could be done in Penrith.
I will look on the internet to find the Wetherspoons site to confirm where it is and with view to emailing Wetherspoons & the Alhambra to suggest this - the two businesses could complement each other cinema goers could meet at the pub before going to see films.
Other Penrith publicans & hoteliers probably won't like a Wetherspoons in the town since they have cheap drinks promotions and drink & meal deals that will undercut established businesses.
A petition has been set up to try and rally support for a change of heart. I would appreciate it if you would consider signing, before it's too late.
