Striding Edge, Helvellyn

Striding Edge is one of the more challenging routes commonly attempted by fell walkers in Cumbria. It is not to be attempted lightly, it is sharp knife edged rocky ridge with a few parts of some technical difficulty. The chimney is the 'crux' which is located just short of the final push for the summit. There are various options to vary the difficulty of the route to the side of the main ridge line.

The route is a rewarding one, with clear views of Fairfield and St Sunday crag to the south. In winter Striding edge is a serious undertaking and normally requires ice axe and commonly crampons. The route is often combined with Swirral edge which is a far simpler route which is steep and shaley.
